Jeff has been in the landscape trade in Bermuda for thirty four years. Educated at Warwick Academy, Jeff had always been interested in Bermuda’s flora and fauna, and so, attended the Audubon Society’s Natural History course where it truly opened his eyes to the natural beauty of this island paradise and at the age of 16, he attended the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries Apprenticeship Scheme.
Once he had successfully completed his apprenticeship scheme, he went on to join the Elbow Beach Hotel as propagator. Two years later, he joined Stonington Beach Hotel as the head gardener. It is believed that Jeff was the youngest head gardener of any hotel in Bermuda. Two years later at the age of 22, he and two partners formed P.A.L.M.S. Ltd. Having the passion and entrepreneurship to move on, he sold his interest in that company and ventured out on his own founding Sousa’s Landscape Management Co. Ltd. and Sousa’s Gardens. Today, he employs a staff of 50.
Over the years, Jeff has been heavily involved in the landscape profession and community by serving as president of the Bermuda Horticultural Association, had a seat on the Board of Agricultural & Fisheries, has judged at the local Agricultural Exhibition for the last two decades, and has been a judge and parade coordinator of the Bermuda Heritage Day Parade. He has also served on the Bermuda Heritage Advisory Committee, and the Bermuda Millennium Committee. Jeff has been a member of the PLANET (Formerly Associated Landscape Contractors of America) since 1988. He was honored to be invited to judge at the Texas Landscape Contractors Association Landscape Awards. In March of 2000, Jeff and Sousa’s Landscape Management Co. Ltd. were profiled in the March 2000 issue of ALCA Advantage magazine. In January 2001, he was invited as a featured speaker at the Professional Horticultural Conference in Virginia. Jeff is a life member of the National Chrysanthemum Society.
Jeff is also a Past President of the Hamilton Rotary Club where he was honored to receive the Paul Harris Award – one of Rotary’s highest awards for community work. He also serves as Chairman of the Occupational Advisory Committee for Horticulture, working closely with both the Bermuda College and the National Training Board. He has also served on the board of the Bermuda Equestrian Federation as well as serving as the Chairman of the Local CEA Committee. Currently Jeff is a Mentor with the Bermuda Small Business Development Corporation Partnering for Success intuitive.
Jeff has always believed in giving back to his community and for the last 30 years, has volunteered to sit on numerous boards and committees. He has served as both the Deputy Chairman and Chairman of the United Bermuda Party, and recently won a primary to represent the UBP in the next election for Warwick West, the constituency his family has lived and worked in for over 100 years
